The Dakota Group

Dakota Truck Underwriters and First Dakota Indemnity Company are collectively known as The Dakota GroupTM. We have grown to be the No. 1 writers of workers' compensation insurance in the state of South Dakota and one of the largest writers in the Upper Midwest.

You can choose from either a traditional insurance program (FDI) or receive the benefits of membership in a non-assessable reciprocal insurance program (DTU). Either way, you’ll see that our focus on quality is grounded by sound business principles and financial strength.

The Dakota GroupTM is comprised of Dakota Truck Underwriters and First Dakota Indemnity Company. The positive attributes of The Dakota GroupTM are supported by the benefits garnered through its relationship with RAS, which serves as the Attorney-in-fact for DTU (and owns the remaining 50% of FDI) and manages all of the insurance operations for The Dakota GroupTM.


Dakota Truck Underwriters

In the insurance industry, Dakota Truck Underwriters (DTU) stands apart. Formed in 1989 as a reciprocal insurance company to serve the needs of the trucking industry, DTU has grown and prospered in partnership with its policyholders.

A wide variety of businesses beyond trucking now utilize DTU as a means to reduce losses, improve productivity, and strengthen their bottom line.


First Dakota Indemnity


When First Dakota Indemnity Company (FDI) gains a new customer, it's the start of a close relationship characterized by frequent communication with employers, fair treatment of injured workers, and proactive claims management.
